Security of Star Wars with Derek Rook

The galaxy is in turmoil. Marginalized citizens grow tired of the ever present boot on their necks. They organize, they rally, they rebel! To maintain their hold over the galaxy, the Empire begins developing terrible weapons. They conscript a brilliant scientist who is known to harbor anti-Imperial sentiment. Wait...what? Errr...next scene...

The rebels are caught in an Imperial space station. The situation is dire. Luckily, one of their droids plugs into a computer terminal, instantly accesses the Imperial network without proper authentication, and saves the day. Ugh! Next Scene!
In a desperate final action the Rebellion launches a last ditch assault against the Imperial battle station. With only outdated codes, all is lost. But they get through the security checkpoint?! Okay, does anyone bother listening to my security awareness talks?!?!

One week before May the Fourth (be with you), blast off at Wavelength Brewing to take an in-depth look at what really happens when we don't following common security advice. Professional Slicer (Star Wars-ese for Hacker) Derek Rook will be your guide as you explore the extent of these follies, including demos of real world cyber attacks!
Together we will rise as a new security power in the galaxy! Join us! It is your destiny!

The Worlds of Star Wars

Wavelength Brewing Company is honored to welcome back Astrophysicist Dr. Lisa Will and Analytical Chemist Professor Shane Haggard for another great Friday Night Science Talk!

We're all familiar with scenes of the desert world of Tatooine and the cloudy skies of Bespin, but do planets like that really exist? With an ever increasing rate of exoplanet discovery, there is no shortage of far away worlds to examine and compare. Exoplanets that orbit binary stars are plentiful, and we've even discovered exoplanets around some of the closest stars to our system! Come learn about the strange worlds that are in a galaxy no-so-far-away!

Our Friday Night Science Talks are 100% free and all ages. As always, clear skies mean we'll break out the Big Friendly Telescope (B.F.T.) after the talk and peer into the cosmos! Hey, that's no moon...

Suds & Science: The Internet of Biology

The Internet of Biology: How Graphene Biosensors Are Giving People Instant Access To Their Biology

Knowing what is happening inside your body is virtually impossible, e.g., is the medication you took working or do you have the flu or a bacterial infection? While the internet and the digital ecosystem have enabled instant personal access to most facts, the parts of our lives governed by biology are still shockingly unavailable. Nanomedical Diagnostics’ state-of-the-art graphene-based biosensors are connecting biology directly to the Internet of Biology; thus shining the light on biological unknowns for the first time. Join Dr. Francie Barron, Vice President of Research & Development and Regulatory Affairs for Nanomedical Diagnostics, as she walks us through what is a graphene-based biosensor, the challenges with FDA regulation, and how Nanomed is empowering San Diego innovators to give us the knowledge to access our biology and impact our health.

Cost: $5 online; $6 at the door. Beer is available for purchase and water is available for free. Please, feel free to bring your favorite dinner. You can also order food from the neighboring restaurants, who will deliver your order to Wavelength, such as URBN Vista and When Pigs Fly BBQ.

Please note: During this event, there will be photography and video recording. By attending this event you consent to and authorize without further compensation the use and reproduction of any film or photographs.

About Suds & Science:

Sometimes, the most interesting discussions occur over a beer or a glass of your favorite vino. (Bonus points if you can remember what was said the next morning!) That’s the concept behind Suds & Science, a monthly event that brings scientists face-to-face with the general public in a neighborhood bar. Each session kicks off with a short and enlightening presentation, after which the floor is open for discussion between the audience and the speaker. We cover a wide variety of topics that can range from the science of beer to superhero physics to the genius of genomes. We invite you to come, sit back, sip your favorite beverage and participate in the discussion. Suds & Science puts the fun and spirit(s) back into learning.

Suds & Science is generously sponsored by Qualcomm.

Roving the Red Planet: 20 Years of mars Exploration

Wavelength Brewing Company is honored to welcome Jack Lightholder from the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory for our Friday Night Science Talk!

No person on Earth under 20 years of age has experienced a day without NASA at Mars. The Pathfinder mission, carrying the Sojourner rover, landed on Mars on July 4, 1997. In the 20 years since Pathfinder's touchdown, eight other NASA landers and orbiters have arrived successfully, and not a day has passed without the United States having at least one active robot on Mars or in orbit around Mars.

Jack Lightholder is a member of the Machine Learning and Instrument Autonomy Group at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. He supports a variety of missions in concept, development and operational phases, including engineering camera operations for the Mars Science Laboratory, Curiosity. Jack has previously lead a number of high altitude balloon, microgravity aircraft and small spacecraft development projects.

Our Friday Night Science Talks are 100% free and all ages! If we have clear skies in Vista, we'll break out our telescopes after the talk for a look into the cosmos, cheers!

First To The Moon: 50 years since we left earth orbit

Wavelength Brewing Company is honored to welcome Francis French, Director of Education at the San Diego Air & Space Museum, for another great Friday Night Science Talk!

Half a century ago, humans first left the relative safety of Earth orbit for a three-day, quarter of a million mile journey to the moon. First, however, the Apollo program had to recover from a devastating fire that killed a crew, test the spacecraft - and do it with the deadline of the end of the decade looming.

Join us on a journey through the seven short years from the first flight into space to the first moon mission, with Russians and Americans neck and neck to claim the glory.

Open Source Maker Labs

Wavelength Brewing Company is proud to welcome back the team from Open Source Maker Labs for another great Friday Night Science Talk! Learn about #ProjectAtlas and how you can get involved!

Project Atlas is all about citizen science! OSML is building a science expedition vehicle to help get more people engaged by getting out in the field - to actually do science. To be able to go anywhere to do field research, you need a vehicle that can go there. OSML has acquired a military surplus 5-ton, six wheel drive truck, and they're building a portable lab on it. These are commonly called "expedition vehicles", are are essentially all-terrain, self-sustaining RV's. We're going to have Project Atlas parked in front of the brewery for the talk! We may even setup a telescope in the back ;-) Don't miss it!
